Beyond English- teaching other subjects in Japan

2010/04/08

Here at EduCareer, we place teachers in schools. Primarily these are English teachers, but we also place subject teachers. It's not common, but if you have a specialty such as art, music, or physical education, there are opportunities to teacher your subject without returning to your home country!

In principal, subject teachers have a degree or strong background in an elective subject such as music or PE. Occasionally positions open for subjects such as social studies or history taught in English at schools with a large number of returnee students, but mainly subject teachers are recruited for activity-based lessons. Teachers will also most likely be called on to teach English classes as well, so even for subject positions a good command of English is necessary. Experience teaching your subject in your home country is supremely helpful.

While teaching a subject course in addition to English means more work, it also means more fun! Getting to experience life with the students outside the English classroom and teaching according to your interests is a rare opportunity in Japan. Helping teachers find these opportunities that utilize their talents and interests is one of the things that sets EduCareer/Global Partners apart.
