Elementary school English, dangerous?

2010/06/30

We've written about this before, but from the next fiscal year Elementary Schools will have 外国語活動(foreign language activities, with the emphasis on English) as a regular subject. The program has been planned for a while but the closer it comes to implementation, to louder the protests seem to get. Books such as 危うし!小学校英語(Dangerous! Elementary School English) and 小学校に英語は必要ない(Elementary School English is Unnecessary) are being published with the thesis that elementary school students need to master Japanese and other subjects before tackling a foreign language- and that students will have plenty of time to become fluent in English from Junior High School on.

While those arguments may not have much merit (after all, 45 minutes of English a week isn't going to do anything to prevent the students from attaining proficiency in their native language, and while people certainly can become fluent in a second language as adults, it requires motivation), the bigger problem might be the lack of trained elementary school English teachers. Many elementary school homeroom teachers said they don't feel comfortable teaching English (something Eigo Note tried to correct, but the program seems to have already been scrapped), most elementary school ALTs aren't trained to teach English to younger kids in a progressive fashion, and the end result may be similar to what many schools have in place now- lessons that rehash a lot of vocabulary kids already know in katakana through games, without much communicative English and without motivation for the kids to retain what they learn.

The bright side is this creates a need for trained elementary school teachers in Japan! If you love kids and have experience in elementary education, this could be your lead into a great position where you can make a real difference-all those teachers who lack confidence in English will be happy to leave the planning to you!
