Good Education Begins With the Home
2010/07/06
No one would be surprised to hear good education starts at home, with parents who pay attention to their children and supervise their homework and study routines. But what about designing a whole house around the idea of education, making the optimal environment for kids to study? That's what Professor Hideo Kageyama, creator of popular math-learning game百ます計算, has designed. Features include large closets to encourage kids to put away toys and remove distractions, a spacious kitchen where the parents can help with homework, and bookcases scattered throughout the home so kids can read whenever and wherever they get the urge.
Upon first read, it may seem like the idea of making more space for kids might be hard in area-challenged urban Japan. Traditionally the emphasis has been on maximizing the home's floor space at the expense of storage- but from these pictures the houses look quite open despite the compromise.
Speaking of expense, though, I couldn't find a clear price on how much one of these houses will set you back- but some parents will do anything for their child's education.
You can read more about it here at the Wall Street Journal here .
