No vacation, please, we're Japanese
2010/07/12
It's pretty common for English teachers in Japan to complain about their work conditions- but turns out most of us get a leg up when it comes to vacation. A Harris Interactive survey of 9000 adults in 13 countries showed that on average Japanese take the least vacation of any nationality- they receive around 16.5 days a year but only take 8.5. Compare this to the French, who get almost 38 days a year and take almost all of them, or even the British who take 25 of their allotted 28. Americans took second (second to last?) place for least amount of vacation- they received an average of 17 days and took 14. Canadians, New Zealanders, and Australians took between 16-18 days, still far below the European countries. It's unclear if this work ethic actually translates into more productivity, but it does make one appreciate the vacation time and school holidays all the more!
