Personality by Prefecture
2010/07/26
Scientists in Japan recently performed a survey of people in different prefectures, trying to gauge if where you are born has an effect on your personality. For example, Kyoto-ites, with their long history, are known for arrogance, wheras people from spacious Hokkaido are outgoing and friendly. People from Kyushu come off well, with Fukuokans being generous, Kagoshima people are noble, and Miyazaki people are amiable and optimistic. Aomori breeds stubborn, plainspoken but respectable people while the Iwate-born are as cold emotionally as the prefecture is physically. And everyone can agree that Tokyo-ites are just putting on airs.
While as much folklore as anything, perhaps kenminsei does have elements of truth- ask anyone who's lived in both Kansai and Kanto for their regional impressions! And if you're job hunting, maybe keep it in mind. It might be hard to teach in hot-headed Yamaguchi, but students will be eager to learn in cosmopolitan Kanagawa. And if you're not so concerned about personality, Akita is said to have the prettiest girls to look at!
