Bilingual from Birth?
2010/10/12
In Japan, eikaiwa classes are offered from infants to the elderly. Those in a position teaching pre-verbal infants may wonder if what they're doing is really effective, but new research suggests starting even earlier could be beneficial- even when the babies are still in the womb! A study of Philippine women who spoke either English only or English and Tagalog showed that at birth babies who only heard English while in the womb showed a marked preference for English, whereas babies who heard both languages showed no preference. Scientists were also able to determine that babies of bilingual mothers were able to distinguish between English and Tagalog and paid attention to both, but babies of monolingual mothers were only interested in English. Maybe it's time for pre-natal eikaiwa after all! Want to teach? Don't forget to register and check out the job board!
