An Opposite Approach for Japanese Education

2011/01/12

It seems the Japanese government is finally listening to what many people have been saying- that for English education in Japan to be effective, it has to have the backing of internationalized Japanese English teachers and not just bring foreign teachers to Japan. To that effect, the government has earmarked five hundred million yen to send young Japanese teachers to the US to learn English teaching methods and teach Japanese at pilot programs in New York and Los Angeles. Teachers will spend six months abroad and return to Japan with (hopefully) improved language skills and new teaching methods.

With Japanese students no longer interested in studying abroad, it is hoped that sending teachers will strengthen ties in the US and continue the internationalization of Japan. It remains to be seen, however, how effective the teachers will be at implementing their new knowledge in the schools. I often hear from foreign teachers  that the older Japanese teachers are not open to new teaching styles- younger Japanese teachers who are expected to defer to their older colleagues may soon have the same complaints!
