Elementary School Teachers Lack Confidence in English
2011/02/17
According to a recent study conducted by Benesse, the majority of elementary school teachers claim they are not confident in teaching English classes and would prefer English classes be taught by teachers specializing in English. While a large percentage (81%) said their English classes are going well, only a third of respondents said that they are confident in using English. More than half said they do not have much confidence.
Considering the average amount of English training teachers reported receiving was a mere 6.8 hours, with 20% reporting no training at all, it's no wonder teachers are a little overwhelmed. It's encouraging, though, that teachers generally report classes are going well-perhaps in time they will develop more confidence, and can thus impart it to their students, which will be good for everyone working in the language industry in Japan.
