International School of Asia
2011/02/23
Anyone who has worked in Japanese schools, especially outside of Tokyo, can attest to a lack of ethnic and cultural diversity in the classroom. International schools fare better, but are often a more attractive option to expat students than domestic. Lin Kobayashi, a Tokyo native who attended school in Canada, is hoping to provide an alternative- The International School of Asia, a boarding school in Nagano prefecture. The school will offer the International Baccalaureate program and aims to recruit 30-40% of its student body from Asian countries other than Japan.
According to Kobayashi, the school will "include not only classes on Japanese language, but also Japanese culture and arts", though the language of instruction will be English. In this way the school will combine Japanese education with diversity of an international school. While construction has yet to begin, The International School of Asia will provide an interesting alternative to the current models of education in Japan.
