Song for the Close of School
2011/02/01
How many of you have heard "Aogeba Totoshi" at your school closing ceremonies? Maybe you don't know the name, but would recognize it if you heard it. It turns out this tune familiar to the Japanese has its roots in an American song no longer known in America. The 1871 "Song for the Close of School", has been found to be identical to the Japanese song in notation and melody, says the researcher who discovered it while looking through classic songbooks. While very little is known of the song or how it came to be widely used in Japan, it's an interesting example of internationalization we didn't even know about! Read more about it in the Mainichi Daily here.
