Japanese Students Don't Feel Capable
2011/03/01
Earlier we wrote about Japanese teachers lacking confidence in English. Now another survey, covering students in Japan, China, South Korea, and the USA, shows that Japanese students are lacking confidence in, well, basically everything.
Less than half the Japanese students thought they were valuable people, and less than a quarter were satisfied with themselves. Compared to the other students, the majority of whom answered affirmatively that they thought they were valuable people and were satisfied with themselves, the gap is surprising.
Perhaps the answer lies at home- when asked if their parents think they are capable, 91.3 of US students, 76.6 percent of Chinese students and 64.4 percent of South Korean students answered yes. Only 32.6% of Japanese students did so.
Often teachers here complain that students don't take initiative or speak up in class, but with student confidence so low it's hardly surprising.
