Preschool Learning and Later Literacy
2011/08/23
Schools across Japan have been pushing English to younger and younger students, but studies are constantly proving the importance of a rich learning environment for young children. Findings published in Child Development followed children from low-income homes from preschool through fourth grade and found that there was a strong connection between the preschool environment and later language and comprehension skills.
While the study only measured native language use, the strongest finding was that students whose preschool teachers used more sophisticated language with them later were more adept at using language themselves (as judged by video and audio monitoring of the teachers' classroom manner). It would stand to reason toddlers who are around caregivers who use multiple languages skillfully will gain advantages as well.
