Motivation for the Future
2011/09/27
Teachers in Japan can find students difficult to motivate. Japan is an island country, and some students can't even picture themselves ever leaving, much less going somewhere sans guide where they might have to use English. It's no surprise, then, that English education has lagged. But with businesses like Rakuten and Uniqlo announcing they plan to run all of their operations in English, adults are rediscovering the need to learn English and paying big money to take conversation lessons. Many admit they wish they had studied harder in school when the lessons were free to them.
How can we help our students get the message? Including information on the various changes in business and how many Japanese companies expect employees to know English is one way. Especially older students under pressure from exams can relate to the difficulty of finding a job, and showing them how English can be a leg up in the market.
