The Rhythm of Communication
2011/09/07
We're all familiar with the concept of a conversation as being like a game of catch, with people tossing words back and forth between them. Now linguistic scientists are analyzing the flow of conversation, and learning that even the rhythm of human interaction may be hardwired.
A study looking across cultures found similar patterns of burst-long pause-burst which have an effect on the spread of information. The same type of communication pattern was seen in phone conversation, e-mail, and even website visits. Regardless of whether people consider themselves shy introverts or talkative extroverts, communication style is steady. This type of information can be valuable in how to distribute disaster information, or for things like viral marketing campaigns.
