Public and Private Schools
2011/11/29
EduCareer matches teachers with private schools in Japan. If you've only worked in the public school system, you may wonder how different working in a private school is. Is it very strict? Do teachers have to wear suits? Are the kids all really advanced?
Private schools vary a lot more than their public school counterparts. Some do cater to the academic elite or returnee students, others exist for the opposite end of the spectrum- students who couldn't test into their local public school and need lots of academic support. Some focus on arts, sports, or crafts, while others are barely distinguishable from public schools, curriculum-wise.
One thing private schools have in common, however, is a degree of flexibility in the role of the native teacher. Most private schools allow the native teacher to teach solo, plan the curriculum, and even select textbooks and work on entrance examinations. With that flexibility, however, comes responsibility. As the role is not limited as in public school, private school teachers usually put in longer hours than public school teachers.
