Students Think English Is Valuable, But Don't Want To Use It

2012/01/31

A recent survey has shown that while many students know English is valuable for their future careers, very few want to use it themselves

A survey conducted by MEXT showed that while 85% of students agreed it was "important" or "rather important" to study English and 70% agreed or generally agreed it English would be useful for getting a job in the future, they felt very differently when thinking about English on a personal level.

When asked if they liked English, only 22% responded affirmatively, and the number only rose to 30% when students were asked to choose directly between "like" and "dislike." Only 11% want to use English in their future, and 43% said they don't want to get a job that uses English.

This shows a large disparity about how students think about English in the abstract and how they apply English in their life. While educators have apparently been successful at teaching students the value of English, students still don't see the appeal of using it.
