Romance Abroad

2012/07/11

This article in the Daily Yomiuri takes a look at cultural differences between Japan and the West in terms of "Harlequin romances."  Historically and scientifically speaking, of course.

It's interesting to see how Japanese writers taking on the increasingly popular romance novel genre in the 1980s started writing their own versions of romantic love stories with a cultural perspective completely different from the original English novels that inspired them.

Language alone is not enough to crash through certain cultural barriers, so when the opportunity comes along you should always take the chance to try and see things from a different perspective.  You may learn a few things about your own culture (both positive *and* negative) that you never noticed before.  (Reader Beware: juicy romantic stereotypes and clichés abound)
