Obon Festivities

Obon is a traditional festival/holiday going on this week in Japan.  You can read a lot about it on Wikipedia or other internet resources, but in general, this is what happens:  Most Japanese workers will take time off to go visit their hometowns or their parents' hometown.  It's an opportunity to spend time with family members they haven't seen in awhile, and of course they usually visit their family graves as part of a long tradition.

Each area in Japan celebrates differently, but there are festivals, floating lantern rituals, and a variety of other interesting events that make Obon a very special time of year.

For English teachers and other foreigners living in Japan, Obon comes in the middle of August which means you are most likely already on summer vacation.  If your job doesn't offer time off for Obon or summer vacation, you are probably still a fan of the holiday because the morning commute is a lot easier to tolerate thanks to the mass exodus of workers from Tokyo or other big cities.  From all of us working through the holiday, bon voyage~
