Raising Global Consciousness in the Class

The need for Global Citizens in Japan is undeniable. We as foreign teachers are uniquely able to help our students become more globally aware.

The first step is pretty easy; to teach how big the world really is. You may have students who've been to more countries than you have, while there may be other students who have never left their own neighborhood. If you can really show them just how vast and interesting the world is than the reaction of students should be pretty universal. Especially when you show them just how tiny Japan is. Don't make them feel insignificant and intimidated, just spark a sense of wonder in them. Tell them they belong to the entire world, and that the entire world belongs to them. No idea, region, or culture of the world is off-limits to them, nor should anything be forced on them just because of where they've been born. The only real barriers are the limits their own passion and ability to understand, and that learning English will help open these doors.

The next step to increase their global awareness is to show them just how global their lives already are. Take a moment with them and cherish how magnificent it is that there are tomatoes in Japan, tofu in America, or that all of humanity migrated from Africa, and that inter-racial marriage was once illegal. Show them how Visual K (Japanese music) was inspired by KISS, or how Japanese manga has revolutionized comic books in France. Talk  with them about racism, regionalism, bias, bigotry, segregation, oppression, and agenda. Show them how these things create suffering in the world. Instill with them a sense that victories and tragedies of different countries collectively belong to our entire species, and when we look at ourselves on a planetary scale, it is all one shared story.
Basically, the process of raising global consciousness is to identify with the world on a global scale, gain perspective, and return to create a better Earth by taking care of your own immediate community. Find ways in the classroom to celebrate this dichotomy of mutual-belonging. Encouraging pride and enthusiasm for ones own community or team from inside a framework of overall kinship with the entire world or class. McLuhan believed that the emerging "Global Village" status of countries having more immediate and transparent interactions with each other is blurring the lines between contradictions, such as allowing for multiple cultural and philosophical memberships within the overall cooperation of being a global citizen.

Basically your students are NOT Japanese people who living in the world. They are world people living in Japan. As a living testament to the vast and rich nature of the world, you are uniquely able to raise their global consciousness.
