These language infographics will surprise you!

2015/06/11

Here is a very interesting infographic which depicts the most spoken languages of the world. Both Spanish and Chinese are more widely spoken than English. Although 'Chinese' is not a single language, but 13 separate languages represented together on this graph (which seems a little disingenuous...) Still, it is fascinating to see that there are roughly 335,000,000 native English speakers around the world. With 110 countries in which English is officially spoken, and around 1,500,000,000 people learning English as a foreign language overall! That is 20% of the entire world's population...How does that make you feel as an English teacher?

It's also interesting to see how well Japan is represented despite it's small geographic reach. 128 million native speakers, and the 7th most popular foreign language to be learned.

Despite an Spanish and "Chinese" being more prevalent around the world, it would seem that English remains the most commonly used language on the internet. With English used by 55.4% of all the websites whose content language could be determined.
