Visualization

2020/01/31

"If you want to reach a goal, you must see the reaching in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal" - Zig Ziglar

Our first blog for the year 2020, and quite a belated one at that. The business and academic year will be upon us in a couple of months, so there's no better time than now to think about your future career, whether it be in education or not.

Do you remember the last time you visualized your future? Back when you were in high school or college perhaps? Most of us can probably admit that since becoming 'adults' and having a day job, there is no time to sit back and visualize about future dreams, or even giving it a mere thought in our busy daily routines.

Here's a visualization exercise to try out, and it should take no more than a few minutes. Surely, we can spare a few minutes... This exercise will enable you to think creatively and imaginatively about your direction and potential. It's also quite helpful for those who are in a routine that is not of their choosing, or who lacks confidence, or who need help visualizing who they can be or what they can do.

The exercise: Imagine that you are 18 years old. You just received an excellent set of exam results that gives you a free choice to study for a degree or qualification at any university, anywhere around the world. You also have a scholarship that will pay for all the fees - no loans, no debts, no pre-conditions.

Now, the question is, what would you study? Or in other words, what would you love to  spend a couple of years becoming brilliant at? As a bonus, you can keep all the benefits of your accumulated knowledge and experience. Moreover, you can even create your own degree or course to fit exactly what you want to do!

The important part of this exercise is for you to visualize and consider what you want to do if you have a free choice. So, having visualized something that is hugely important to you, and that you will only be on this earth once, and that you will not come back again and have another go - what is actually stopping you from pursuing your dreams?

There may be legitimate excuses and obstacles, but you will find that many of them will be self-imposed hence your 'busy' daily routines. Of course, it's not always easy to do the things we want to do however, most things are possible, and you need not go to college for several years to start to become what you want to be and follow a new direction. It starts with a realization that your future is in your own hands.

Our passions and potential are never out of reach, and we are the only ones stopping ourselves from achieving them. Living without regrets is the cornerstone of a happy and 'successful' life. Going to bed every night knowing that you are on track for achieving your dreams will give you a sense of fulfillment and a greater reward than distracting yourself with busy work. Work towards being the person you visualized in the exercise, and say hello to a better you each morning.
